Washington, DC - Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-5) issued the following statement on the death of newspaperman James Briggs McClatchy – senior member of one of the last family-owned papers in the nation.
“The newspaper business was an intrinsic part of Jim McClatchy. To him it was a noble profession, a form of public service. He recognized the faith the public placed in the paper and never wanted them to feel that faith was misplaced.
“It was his opportunity to create a better world and just as importantly, improve the community in which he lived. Like his work with Valley Vision. Through which he sought to look at the challenges facing Sacramento and how we as a region grow, yet still retain the quality of life that makes our community unique. And this is but one example of how Jim demonstrated deep concern for improving Sacramento. Just as Sacramento is a part of Jim, so too is Jim a part of Sacramento.
“While Jim McClatchy will be missed, the Sacramento Bee will continue on into the future always reminding us of the contributions he made and his dedication to this community. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this time of loss.â€
