Washington, DC - Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-5) issued the following statement on the Republican Budget Resolution:

“This budget resolution keeps us on the same irresponsible and unsustainable path that America has been traveling for the past five years.  The Republican budget plan continues to run dangerous fiscal deficits while under-investing in vital programs like health care, education, science and environmental protection that help working families and develops future generations of Americans.

“Congress has a responsibility to ensure we are investing the necessary resources now so that the next generation has the same opportunities that we have had. Cutting taxes at the expense of our children and our children’s children is incompatible with that principle, but that is exactly what the Republican leadership of this Congress has done.

“This budget should have been a blueprint for our national priorities.  Instead it has become the symbol of a missed opportunity.  We need a budget that makes working families the top priority.  Democrats offered a budget that would increase funding for education, health care, veterans and the environment.  And the Democratic plan would reinstitute the Pay-Go rules that brought us fiscal discipline during the 1990’s, achieving a balanced budget in 2012.

“Each day that passes without us correcting the mistakes of the past five years will worsen the debt we will burden our children and grandchildren with.  History will show that this Congress abdicated its duty to serve the best interests of this nation.  This budget is shortsighted and misguided, and our children and our children’s children will pay the price.”
